Hi everyone,
just wondered if anyone knew how to trace a convict that was sent to Austrailia on the last convict ship. He was transported in 1849 for ten years but as ports weren't accepting convicts anymore, i don't know which port he landed at and whether he survived or not.
His name was Charles Hutchby and sentenced at Lincoln in 1847 aged 18 so not sure whether he was born in Lincoln as Hutchbys came from Nottingham area.
Just wondered if anyone knew what Austrailian records to look at
thank you
angie

Various information is held at the National Archives including Transportation Registers for 1787-1871 - problem is not much on line so you would probably need to vist TNA to consult them.
Also have a look at
firstfleet.uow.edu.au
members.pcug.org.au
Might also be worth checking Australian census to see if he popped up post end of sentence

.....seems he may well have been 'freed' soon after arrival ... (apparently he/they had already spent 12mths in UK gaol) ....yes -it seems none of the States wanted this load of convicts! .... I couldn't see any bmd's related to him ....so did he return to the UK? ....Valerie

His Ticket of Leave was reported in The Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser of Wednesday 12 June 1850 having been published in the Government Gazette of Friday June 7th 1850

This website shows the' Adelaide' arrived in VDL 29 November 1849 - having taken on 303 male convicts she only landed 40 there the other 259 (so obviously a few didn't make it through the voyage) were landed elsewhere
