Being, I think, a sensible person, I have avoided Vista even when buying a new laptop. Will these PDF creators/virtual printers work with Vista? Yes, some do, but you need to check compatability for the various alternatives available. Why PDF rather than PAF? Simply that PDF is the univeral standard and in 99% of cases opens with existing installed software, ie Adobe Reader. What's more, any program you use can 'print' PDFs.

Hi Dugless,

Does this program work with Vista as well as XP? Ah now this PDF I download that from Family Search as you needed it for their family tree program.
As below!!

Free PAF Family History Software
Personal Ancestral File (PAF) is a free genealogy and family history program. PAF allows you to quickly and easily collect, organize and share your family history and genealogy information.
Download PAF

Virtual printer? It's a program you instal on your computer which appears to be a printer, but produces PDF files instead. Where do you get the program? You often find a suitable one on the disks with FH mags, but they are also available on line. Try googling 'free pdf' and see what comes up. Very useful for sending long docs as attachments to emails, particularly as vurtually any computer can open them.

Hi Dugless,

I also use a laptop but I haven't heard of "virtual printer" where would that be on a laptop, if I even have it of course.

I was being lucky and found a set of parish record transcriptions on line. Searching for relevant entries without a search facility involved a lot of scanning and ‘page downing’, so much so that I gave up. There had to be an easier way. Inspiration, on my laptop I have a ‘virtual printer’, a program that converts what’s on screen into a PDF. I use Novalite, but there are others, some of them free. Went back to the long web page, pressed Control and P to call up the print function, selected the PDF creator, and saved the file. I then opened the PDF with Adobe Reader and used the search facility in the latest version. Magic! I could search the umpteen PDF pages with a simple click.
