From wikipaedia.....

Aldersgate was a gate in the London Wall in the City of London, which has given its name to a ward and Aldersgate Street, a road leading north from the site of the gate, towards Clerkenwell in the London Borough of Islington.

Is that for freebmd look ups or census pages?

& that's without looking a wikipaedia

Right I see on ancestry where to put in the RG number..thank you Jean.

So to be born within the sound of Bow Bells is to be south of the river is it?

If they could hear Bow Bells they must have lived at the Barbican end of Aldersgate, which would come under City. The other end touches Islington, and Shoreditch.

Bow Bells are in Cheapside, in the City. Nowhere near Bow in east London.

Thank you..I have found on freebmd that I can put City of London in the search criteria and that covers the area I want.

Eeh, Suzanne, never mind the definition, give us some names and details and we will help you. Never heard the Bow Bells, but might be able to find some missing rellies for you.
