I am thinking of buying new FTM software(have v old version of ledgends and not getting on with it). Following advice on here, I thought of getting 2009 FTM. I have looked on internet and how do I tell whether I would be buying the 2009 version or the 2008 version(which everyone seems to say should be avoided) as although the picture on the box says 2009 the spec says 2008. If the box has 'upgrade' on it - is this all I need to buy ?(as I don't already have FTM) - i.e. would this be the right thing?
I expect I'm being stupid but would really appreciate some help or even other suggestions before parting with any money and getting the wrong thing.
Thanks in anticipation

I would have said you would be just as well to by version 2006, as this lets you back up to internet storage, create your own web page and do more things than the 2009, ;;;
I have 2006 as well as 2008 and must admit I use the 2006 version more than any also you can sometimes get it for as little as a fiver, look for the who do you think you are one ;;
You can sometimes get it in Morrisons Tesco or asda ;;;other than that look on amazon

2008 was a completely new program and not an upgraded version of 2006, or version 16 as it was also known.

2009 IS the upgraded version of 2008, and has reputedly fixed many of the shortcomings of the original release.

As the earlier program, 2006 is not likely to be further upgraded it can be had for under a tenner so is good value if you dont want to splash out by the latest version.

References to Premium, De-luxe or other offers DO NOT provide you with a different tree program to the version described. The merely add extra data discs, which many find less than useful, or a reduced subscription to Ancestry, which may be worth looking at if you don't already subscribe.

Thanks for your help BoroBabs ,

I presume that by "the who do you think you are one" you are referring to the edition with the picture of the tree on it rather than the family photos (this has prpbably answered another question I was going to ask).

Thanks all

I have decided to go for FTM earlier version and am about to buy online but now find myself confused.

Do I buy FTM 2006 with picture of tree on front OR FTM v16 which has pictures of people on the box?

Or does it matter which ????????

Thanks, just want to make sure I am getting the right thing and am very keen to get on and buy and get started now I have decided.

Well mine has the picture of the people on the front and I have never had any trouble with this version of 2006.

Still ,I can't believe that 3 years on that they have never improved on the 2006 version, what are they playing at ??

I will stick to what work's fine for now.

2006 and v 16 are the same program. It is only the packaging and marketing that are different.

The program is not now likely to get any more upgrades because it has now been superseded (by 2009) . Bit like a new car model.

Thanks again for all your help. I have ordered FTM 2006 deluxe 5 with pics on box from e bay for £9.99 & it has 3 months free UK ancestry. It seemed to be the best deal and was in UK£ not dollars. I thought I was never going to be able to decide and am fairly technically challenged especially when it comes to the computer(at the 11th hour had to find out whether we had XP - what's that ?)
Can't wait and will be lying in wait for postie - just hope vendor isn't snowed in!
Hopefully teenage kids will install - otherwise I might well be back on here with more questions . . . .

XP is the oeprating system of your computer.

£9.99 wouldnt even cover the 3 months ancestry sub, so they are giving it away. Enjoy. make sure you use the back up to internet storage facility - its saved my life more than once when Ive had puter probs. I think you get so many months free then they ask if you want to pay for it - about £5 or something a year, well worth it.
