Margaret

Genes site is always difficult at first but after a while we all get the hang of it and if someone helps me,I might well tear off to find that info but I cannot see why it is so difficult to return to the source of the advice especially if it helps you in your search, so you can say thanks!

I find it a bit strange that in one paragraph you thank everyone for helping you, then you say you don't think you should feel obliged to thank everyone. Then you suggest you help on GR and don't expect thanks!! But if you help on here then surely that suggests that you know your way around the site.
Confused by your post

It wasn't asking for thanks, but an acknowledgement that he had seen all the replies; some of the posters on his original thread may be wondering if he had seen them; he may not have seen all of them. That's all. We're all on a learning curve, me included ... :-)

Happy hunting, all.

Dear George, and Joy if it applies,

I am the world's worst at finding my away around Genes, I tend to stick to the Tips Board, and hopefully thank anyone who helps me. I am sure I often forget, it is not intentional, but when lots of people help you out, it isn't always easy. If someone finds something useful, I whizz off to check it out, and often have totally forgotten who advised me on that. Yeah, I know I should keep track, but I don't know how to do so. Someone is going to tell me it is easy, but this week I incurred my husband's wrath cos I didn't know how to turn off my new alarm clock. I was told I was stupid. I am a senior lecturer in a University, I am not stupid, but I am no good with equipment, and no good with admin either.

If I happened to post something on another board, I would be most unlikely to remember. I have tried to get to grips with "my threads" but keep forgetting it is there.

So, I know it is no excuse, but THANK YOU TO ANYONE WHO HAS HELPED ME, and I am sorry if I did not do so personally. I know that is not ideal, but I can't do any better.

Let's all be friends. I am sure we are. However we go about it. I really don't feel we are obliged to thank everyone for every little thing they do. Most people help out cos they enjoy doing so.

In fact, it is usually me helping someone else, and I am not really bothered if they don't thank me, more interested if they have a further query as a result of what I have found. More excitement for me!

Margaret

I am frightened to post this. Someone is going to slate me!

That's okay. It would be nice if you could acknowledge the replies on your other thread, too, please. And do, please, read the tips for newbies thread.

i found several people living in my house on the 1911. It transpired that they were not all living here but were living in three different addresses with the same house number as mine in various streets in the enumeration district.

Of course this may not apply to your ancestor, he may have been in a lodging house or something similar. Try googling the address to see if it brings up anything.

No problem, perhaps i was not right either, and should have realised you were new to the boards, only sometimes when people do not reply, you wonder if it was worth looking for info for them.
Good luck in your research
Regards

George

Hello flashyB,
I've been reading the 'Tips Board' but never dared to reply or add anything before; so here goes.... A good book for you to order from your local library would be "Workhouses of the Midlands" by Peter Higginbotham.
Also, you were puzzled by addresses with numerous people registered as living there. The explaination may be the same as when registering births or deaths which took place in the wookhouse. From the late 1800's into the 1900's it was thought (in some districts) to be less of a stigma to give just the address of the institution rather than the name of the workhouse. Hope this is of some help.

Hello everyone, i think i just found my grand father George Bartlett 1870 and his family living in what i think is a workhouse in Birmingham. Their names are amongst many who were living at the same address. Can anyone give me any info where i may find lists of work houses in Birmingham
