Hello, could anyone answer a question I have. Having recently found some ancestors travelling between South Africa and the UK in 1902 and 1908, I wonder if they would have needed a passport (they were British citizens), if there is a record of this and whether the record can be accessed/viewed? I don't know when passports would have come into full use.

Passports not used frequently until made compulsory in 1915. National Archives have some records to 1914 that are indexed - Google National Archives and passports.

Thanks Ivy. Any info is a big help. Will try National Archives online.

Findmypast has a database of passport applications, 1851-1903

Keith in Fujairah - I also asked this question sometime ago but was none the wiser. I have looked on Findmypast, and still no wiser, but I am new to that site. So, my question is, what do I click onto, once I am in the site
Many Thanks

Julia, if you click on migration at the top, on the page that comes up click on search beside register of passport applications
