Hi,
Gosh thanks for all your help and so quick, I thought this would be the case as rumour had it he was the child of local mill owners son, Margaret married when he was 4 to a mr Bryne and moved to Ireland leaving Richard her with her sister. I am going to check Hesketh Mills books and see if any payments were made to the family near his birth, worth a try.
Once again thanks for all the help.

I checked for a Margaret Crump born in Bolton and found one for 1893. Did look for a marriage but didn't find one before 1918.

I know this is very unlikely - but these things obviously happened:

Marriages Jun 1917 (99%)
Crump Edith N Crump Gloucester 6a 647 Scan available - click to view
Crump George C Crump Gloucester 6a 647 Scan available - click to view

His birth cert will clarify things for you though.

I agree with Pam. It looks as if he was illegitimate.

Births Jun 1918 (>99%)

Crump Richard Crump Bolton 8c 681

Possibly illegitimate and no father's name will appear on the birth certificate....unless mother's maiden name Crump married a Crump.

The only way of finding out for certain is to buy the certificate

www.gro.gov.uk cost £7.
