Kathryn

You could write to the military establishment with a request for details. Don't give up too easily! If you can provide proof of a relationship that might be good enough. Give it a whirl, and let us know how you get on.

I think its because its a military establishment that the image isn't available until 2012. I just searched for Nightingale in colchester born 1883.

Thanks folks - I had all Blanche and Alice alright - it really is just Harry.

He is definately Harry so I would be surprised if John is him but it's the closest anyone has come so far. However, could be some kind of mistake. How did you search that please?

Do you know why we cant view that image? Thanks, Kate

There is a John Nightingale b 1883 in a military establishment. Address is MILITARY ROAD AND MERSEA ROAD COLCHESTER. You can't view the original image though.

Have you tried looking for his wife or eldest daughter? As you say hemay have been in barracks but they had to be living somewhere.

Hi there,

I am trying to find Harry Nightingale who was born in Cambridge in 1883 (I have his birth cert). He was almost certainly living in Colchester as a Soldier at the time of the 1911 census. His partner (they didn't marry) was Alice Smith living with their daughter Blanche Nightngale (born in Colchester 1910) in Cambridge. My Nan (his daughter) is still alive and was born in 1912. She is certain he was a soldier in Colchester at this time.

I cannot find Harry at all and wondered if they have not done the soldiers bases or if there was a different system at that time for soliders. I know I've not had this problem before with the other census years. They used to list the soldiers in camps and Police officers in digs etc etc.

Any ideas???

Thanks, Kate xxx
