austrailian census

Hi Everyone,
Does anyone know if Austrailia has a census like we have and if so where i could access it online?
I've tried to search for the census with google but with no luck

......what years were you after? There was a census c1900 in NSW. ..... In case it helps..... each State's Library will check early records including electoral rolls for you. ..Valerie

Hi Valerie,
I wanted two quite early ones to check-1851 and 1861 as I was trying to see if the two convicts carried on living there or moved on

Not sure if you are aware but the NLA is putting archived newspapers online here:

http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home

The search is reasonably good - and you can narrow down by years/states etc.
There are references to tickets of leave etc amongst other things

There are some NSW and Tasmanian convict records on Ancestry and the Tasmanian Archives have a lot of stuff online

Good luck - hopefully they have slightly unusual names???
