You have to buy the BMD cert to see what's on it (at 7 GBP a pop). However, there often is some comparable info in the parish registers. For marrs post 1837, the info will be identical to the m.cert - births are not actually recorded, just baptisms. Similarly, no deaths, just burial services. Even when you get the certs, there's less info on them, although births are pretty close. Also, the IGI coverage isn't so good.

So the first step post-1837 is to check the GRO index at FreeBMD. One can buy certs thru the GRO, or the local RO who hold the original. Some local ROs have their indices at least partly online (notably in Lancs and Dur)- they may have different info from the GRO index. For stuff pre-1837, like pre-1855 in SCT, the OPRs are your main resource. Sometimes you can find useful amounts transcribed and online - it varies very much by county. Try googling for Durham (or whatever) parish records. Many folk take out a subscription of some sort - Gold at GR or Ancestry (free trial for 2 weeks, then later pay for a couple of months) - to get as many census records as they can. Some counties have reasonable coverage some years at FreeCEN, and there's the LDS 1881 free and online.

Hi, Sorry to be a bit thick but have recently started looking at the English side of family. Up til now have been working on the scottish side. Trouble is i'm finding the English searches confusing, all i get is lists! Are any of the detailed bmd's on the site, the ones with mother, father etc. Any help would be great. Thanks
