Hod ringer, what did they do?

Nail two boards together at right angles so they make a vee. Use another board to close one end off, and stick a 3 foot pole out the bottom so you can carry the thing on your shoulder when it's full of bricks - that's what a hod is.

All I can find that may fit is a hog ringer, but that is on American and Canadian sites.
It may be another term for hob carrier - a hob being a device for carrying bricks.
Not sure of the precise meaning of a ringer though. Has he other occupations described on other censuses? That might help.

Hi,
a HOD was a bricklayers labourer, are you sure its Ringer and not RIGGER as a rigger worked a hoist so I would say he was A "HOD CARRIER"
