James Hitchcock and the herring family. Coincidenc

James hitchcock was a blacksmith and in 1851 was appenticed to James Herring in Downham Market norfolk.
In 1881 he is living in Kent and has Rchard Herring living with him.
I wonder if this was just coincidence - or if Richard was in some way related to James?
If i could find out it may be another piece of the puzzle -
at present i don't seem to be able to prove a link - just the same name.

Hi Alice,

When Samuel Pepys was first working at the Navy Office he had a clerk by the name of Will Hewer.

In his declining years Pepys lived with Will and his family. They were not related but clearly liked and respected each other. Maybe your James and Richard Herring had the same sort of relationship.

James wasn't married? Otherwise I would have made the [obvious] suggestion that Richard was a relation of James' wife.

Can you list the census details?

Found them.

It's a John Herring not Richard.

Unfortunately, James Herring doesn't have any children listed in 1841 so it's impossible to tell.

John's father and grandfather were both born in Berkshire. The dates pretty much rule out any connection to the Norfolk Herrings.

Someone has posted a thread about a blacksmith's website. I shall have a look for it and post the link for you in a minute.

Also, Norfolk have some info on line - NOAH - you might find some details on apprenticeship records or a Herring will maybe.

This is the link to the blacksmith's site - it's very good:
