I think you need to get your own sub and also read the Tips for Newbies - Ill nudge it up for you. You need to verify information by buying certificates. And you need access to census information.

Hi Molly, I agree with Kath. Unless you have pretty reliable evidence of earlier generations (I was lucky in having a family photo from around 1900 with all the names on it), you could be barking up the wrong tree.

Another piece of advice is to get organised with record-keeping before you start. There are lots of threads on here re record-keeping, for all sorts of purposes.

If you are just starting your family tree you do not want to start with a name from 1842. You need to start with yourself and work backwards, with your parent's names, their marriage (if they married), then their births, then your grandparent's marriages and then their births, and so on until you get back as far as 1901 when you can start looking at census records.

hi my name is molly,i am starting my family tree so i borrowed my friends genes united to i see what results it may bring me.I have the surname Rhoden in my tree a james Rhoden 1842 lancashire but that is it.it isnt much to go on but i'm hoping genes united will help me start.also the name Armstrong on paper i am about 5 generations removed.
