Can anyone tell me how to save a gedcom file to CD. I have downloaded Legacy 7 and can open my file with this. How do I now save my file to a CD? I am operating on vista if this makes any difference.

You need a CD rewriter in your computer and a program such as Nero to allow you to burn it on.

Try opening your Nero programme and going into Help. Your Gedcom file will be treated as a data file.

I have a very old version of Nero and when I open it there is a list of options, including Data.

If you have Nero then you put a blank disc into your rewriter. This may be actually in your computer or it may be an external rewriter.

Click on Nero (it usually puts an icon on your desktop).

It will ask you what you want to do. You click that you want to burn a data CD.

Follow the instructions and it will allow you to find the Gedcom file by offering you a browse.

Click that and just keep clicking any Next buttons till the job is done.

It isn't difficult and pretty much explains itself as it goes along.

Finally when the CD is done write on it in permanent pen what it is and when you did it and put it somewhere safe.

It really is a good idea to get used to backing stuff up like this and you ought to do it regularly for all your important stuff.

My PC came with a DVD / CD writer installed. It appears on 'My Computer' as drive 'E'

I don't have any special software installed - all I do is drag and drop the file onto the drive, having first put a blank CD into it, and click to copy it across.

Family Tree Maker, and possibly other programs too, won't work with the data on CD. It is to do with the fact that it cant update the file. You first have to copy the file from your cd back to your PC and open it from there.
