CROWTHERS OF LOCKWOOD, YORKSHIRE

Madmeg Report 6 Feb 2009 19:50

Hi all

I reckon I am pretty experienced (big head??) at this family tree stuff, but have come up against a problem. My GGG grandmother Ann Crowther was supposedly born Lockwood, Yorkshire (near Huddersfield), c 1820. Married in Glossop, Derbyshire in 1838, her father is simply noted as "Dead".

In 1841 there are a number of Crowthers living in the Glossop area, not "born in county" and in 1851 I find several of them listed as born Lockwood. Obviously I am trying to find Ann's parents.

IGI has no suitable Ann, a nice lady from Huddersfield Library attempted to find her with only one possible entry, and I have just spent £17 on parish register transcripts from the local FHS. There is only one likely Ann, daughter of Joshua and Mary, though IGI has this Ann as daughter of Joh. which could be Joseph. That does nothing for me, other than if he is Joseph, I can see that Joseph and Mary have lots of children, none of whom seem to move to Glossop.

I have transcribed all the Crowther baptisms (about 30 for the period I am looking at) of the local church into a spreadsheet, and attempted to tie up families, and then find out where they were in 1841. I have only found about 10 of them, still in Huddersfield. Where did they all go to? Conversely, I have found lots of other Crowthers in Huddersfield in 1841 who are not on the parish registers. Why not? And I mean lots.

Back to Glossop, I am trying to tie up the Lockwood-born Crowthers with parish registers. Again, not a chance. Savil or Saville seems to be a popular name, my GGG grandma had a son Saville, there is another Saville living in Glossop with a son Saville, but there is only one Saville baptised in Huddersfield and he still there in 1841 and 1851. It is tempting to assume that her parents were Savil Crowther and Ann Thornton, but they have 4 sons baptised in Huddersfield and no daughter.

Basically, I have run out of ideas as to how to find Ann Crowther's parents. I don't mind paying for the odd sensible certificate, if anyone can suggest one to order.

This is the first time I have been totally stuck on someone married after 1837, unless illegitimate (which she might have been).

Ideas gratefully received.

Margaret

You've all done Sterling stuff, but I am looking for people born Lockwood or thereabouts, living in Glossop area.

Ann of Green Gables, the Saville and George you have found I agree with. What I am really asking is why are all the Lockwood births c 1825 missing in Huddersfield, and where have all the Derbyshire residents born Lockwood come from - they are not baptised in Lockwood (parish church Almondbury).

Hi Ann,

Yes I use IGI and everything else. It is a logistics problem I am dealing with - where have all the people baptised Lockwood gone to, and where have all the people living in Glossop, supposedly from Lockwood, been baptised?

I am not asking for look-ups, I have them all, which is why I didn't post of the Trying to Find board. I am looking for Tips as to what on earth to do next. Or do I just give up?

Margaret
