TV Series - 'So You Think You're Royal'

I saw that programme too Karen, but ITV haven't made another series which is a shame.

In So you think you're Royal they take a family where a 'legend' has persisted in the family for many years that they are connected to a Royal. They us the census and registration records (as we all do) to find out where ancestors live and then they take the family there and try to show them a bit of the ancestors way of life. The also find long lost cousins and introduce them ans sometimes the same story been passed down in that branch of the family too.

Unfortunately, the Royal family will not open their records so if someone claims they were the illegitimate child of a Royal, it is very difficult to prove. Also when they get back to pre 1837 times, they sometimes make assumptions.

But is still interesting. Also, it means you could watch 2 hours of genealogy on TV on a Monday (my poor hubby!)

I thought I would mention it in contrast to Who Do You Think You Are? I think its nice that its an ordinary family they use and they introduce them to long lost cousins and take them to places where their ancestors lived. WDYTYA is all about celebrities - most of them are interesting but I found this week's episode a little boring in that it concentrated on 2 individuals. .

I agree though with Karen though, I wish I could get the help of the professionals to trace some of my ancestors!

I've accidently caught this programme a couple of times. Its quite good but the people on it do seem to be clutching at straws. I was quite suprised last week when Nick Barrett appeared as if he was going to use balance of probability to link two women to the Queen Mother. Thankfully they decided to use DNA and proved that all the Bowes weren't related but probably came from a place called Bowes nearby.

Perhaps we could get Maz in the East End (the royal one) to go on there and show them how its done!

Personally I'd like to see a programme called "So you're certain you're not related to Alexis De Tocqueville" then I could get them to do some research in France for me!

I recently discovered this TV series on Sky 3 (Sunday 6pm, Monday 8pm).

It is claimed that half the British population is related to Royalty and this programme takes an ordinary family and explores whether a story that persisted in their family for generations about being related to a Royal is true.

Sometimes it seems the story could be true and sometimes not.
