Thanks for your replies - I'm still at home so it looks like I won't make it!

I think I will take your advice Snowdrops and look at the FHS in the internet.

Thanks

Jeannie

All the fairs are basically the same, just depends how big they are.

They're all there just to make money - nothing wrong with that!

However if you can't be bothered to go along (especially in this weather) just google for the FHS you're interested in.

Most these days have their own websites and sell their own cd's. If you have a query you can contact them and they'll put you in the right direction.

You could even join one (generally about £10 per year) and have access to even more (read their websites for what they offer).

FHS are often a forgotten souce of resources - especially for local MI's!!

I have to admit I wouldn't go just for East of London - they defintley just there to sell their books. They never seem to take any data base with them.

Margaret - Yes I agree it is just like a car boot but you can be really lucky and find lots of help and advice. I always try and check who is going to attend - that's why i won't be going to Olympia. The societies I was interested in aren't going but went to Bracknell.

Hi

Two different experiences. I noticed that the Fhs attending the Crawley fair are South London and Sussex. I have a few names from those areas but its really the East of London and old Middlesex I need.

Does the East of London FHS attend any fairs?

Thanks

Jeannie

Well, I found mine in Buxton to be rather like a car boot sale, loads of tables with people selling old postcards of Brighton and similar, lots of people selling certificate binders (which I was interested in at the time), people selling the facility to have your tree on an 8 foot by 2 foot poster (where are you going to put it?) and most other people bemoaning the fact that they had had little interest in their stalls.and were packing up early to go home. Hardly a lively event to attend, and I wouldn't go to another.

If you've never been it is well worth it. check with the Societies you have an interest in to see if they are going - some of them take their computers with them so they can check names against their lists. They also give lots of advice and have their CD's and books for sale. There are also lots of other more commercial groups that go. Can be quite useful ( take lots of cash), you can usually buy postacrds, 2nd hand books and acid free folders. Bracknell only costs £3.00 to get in.

I've noticed that there is a Family History Fair on tomorrow near Crawley.

Has anyone been to one of these? If so, how much is the entrance fee and what information can be found there? i.e. are they worth attending?

Thanks

Jeannie
