I had a similar problem a few weeks ago - I was receiving emails all right but getting this request for a password when I wanted to send - I'd never used a password. Our local 999 computer therapist gave me the following instructions.
Open Outlook Express
Go to TOOLS then ACCOUNTS.
On the MAIL tab highlight the email account you have an issue with
Left-click on PROPERTIES at right-hand side
LEFT-CLICK ON servers tab.

When I did this I found I had a tick in the box called "logon using secure password authentication". When I unticked this it all worked again. I hope it works for you!

Yours, Elizabeth
