Hi,
Can anyone advise me on how to check info. before ordering birth certs? I have 2 Charles Smiths both born in Worcs. in 1853. I would like to know their father but am not sure which is the one. Do I need to order both or is there a way of checking before paying out?
Many thanks
Pam

Do you know the names of the parents of the one you want?

If you do you can use the reference checking page on the online order form and if the parents are not the ones you give then they will not supply the certificate and refund £4 of your money (which means you pay £3 for them to check).

If you do not know the parent's names then have you looked for both of these people in the 1861 census to see who they are with?

Do you know the fathers name? If so then you can ask for a name check. It costs a bit more but the GRO will only issue the cert if it matches, otherwise you get a partial refund.

Otherwise the is no way of seeing the details without ordering the cert.

Can you find said Charles marriage? Take it you are working backwards? The marriage cert will give the fathers name and occupation and also that of his bride. The residence, his age, his occupation and the names of the witnesses.

Buy the marriage cert first.

Hi Kathleen,
It is possible, I think the family came from Worcester ,mostly around Claines/Northwick area. William was a widower when he married and I think Charles was from his first marriage.
I will check your findings out though. Thanks.
