If you want a free one then download PAF (Personal Ancestry File) from
http://www.familysearch.org/

It is very good and easy to use.

I am sure everyone has their own favourite that they have purchased but you can't go far wrong with FTM (Family Tree Maker ) 2006 . You can probably get it for under £10 but look for one with a free sub to Ancestry. Mine had 3 months free trial, but of course I am now addicted so had to buy an annual sub. Be warned!!
