Hi all ,

my grandfather was john montgomery davidson born in 1890/91 .I have located his marriage and death cert. but have never found his birth cert.
His parents names on both cert. are john montgomery davidson and agnes davidson (nee neil.) I wrote to edinburgh to see if they could find his birth record only to be told there was no said child born of those said parent's .
I have also tried england and wales but still found nothing and i also have never been able to find his parent's marriage cert. either,so as you can see i have been at a standstill and can't get any further
any help would be great. neil

Is this Scotland? When was the registration of births made compulsory? I know in England it's 1875 ish but is it later in Scotland maybe?

For reference: Death:

Agnes Davidson/Neil (cross ref death)
1893
Lanark
District: Airdrie

Agnes is one of those names that could be a derivation of another name.
eg. Ann or maybe Margaret.

Maybe worth thinking about.

Since civil registration began in 1837, all births have to be registered within 6 weeks (42 days). There is a fine for late registration. Until 1875, it was the responsibility of the Registrar (not the parents) to ensure all births were registered. In 1875 the law changed and the responsibility to register a birth now fell on the parents.
There has always - since 1837 - been a fine for late registration of births.
