elizabeth.
when you have learnt how to do gecoms from the very good advice the others are giving you, make sure that you download a copy to your computor and keep it as a safe back up, you can download and update it as you put in more relations. nothing worse than not having a back up to all your hard work?
happy hunting.

Hi Liz,

I asked a very similar question recently and after reading all the helpful advice I finally chose FTM 2006 and can confirm that it is available on E Bay for £9.99 plus postage. I was a ilttle confused as there are various ones availablte in different boxes, some have a picture of a tree on the box and others have a picture of a family and photos, but someone on here advised me that it didn't matter which one, they were the same programme. I was careful to choose the UK version and it was the deluxe 5CD with 3 months free ancestry. It arrived next day, despite terrible weather conditions and was brand new - I think the vendor was called 'hixybabe'.

I am delighted with it , especially as it came with a little instruction book which I find preferable to computer screen instructions, I have found it really easy and enjoyable to use.

Just wish there were more hours in the day!

Ive got 2005 2006 2008 and 2009 but I still use just the 2006 as I find it easier to follow plus you can back it all up to internet storage and cd and you get your own home page free - just a few clicks makes a family tree website for you and people anywhere in the world can view it if you invite them.

I think just yesterday someone on here said they got the 2006 on ebay for £10 including 3 months sub to ancestry - they are paying you with that deal!

Ah, thanks heather, sorry, I didn't see your reply before I replied. So you think just getting an older version is fine and much cheaper?

I guess, then, I should hide all the living relatives then...... if that is the done thing/recommended advice.

You dont need those, see my post above yours, you should be able to get the FTM 2006 for a tenner or less. The ancestry sub is well worth every penny - read the tips for newbies - Ill bump it up.

mmmm, I've just had a look..... Delux £31 and Platinum £54. Is the main difference an extra 3 months on Ancestry? is it worth getting the Platinum? Why would I want to be on Ancestry if I am on here? any benefits?

thanks

The FTM 2006 version is as good as any - there are always lots of threads about this, have a search further down. TWR computing should have it for under a tenner including a sub of some length to ancestry.

No, you wont have to copy it all out again :) You ask for the gedcom (the family tree file) to be sent to you from GR and it will be sent as an attachment. Put your FTM program on your puter and then right click on the gedcom and then click open and everything will automatically appear in your FTM program.

Its not good to allow people access to your records with living persons details. For one thing the living person may object to their details being shown (Id certainly not want my details or my childrens details shown to the world!) and then there is the possibility of identity fraud.

As you are new, Ill nudge up the Tips for Newbies, which gives the absolute basic info. :)

Ok, that sound encouraging.... so if I buy family tree maker, is it best to go for the latest version, or does it not really matter?

What you are saying is, that all the info I have put into GR on my tree can be 'transfered' onto the tree maker package?! I hope they give step by step instructions because talk about gedcom's is WAYYYY over my head!!!!

I have seen the tree maker on Amazon..... I am guessing this is as good a place as any?

oh, and while I am asking question, can someone explain to me the actual risks of having living peoples details on our trees that are not blocked. Is it a total no no, or is it just personal taste or what?! at the moment I have everyones details on...... but don't want to upset people! (it has been fustrating too when people 'share their tree' because we have a match, only to find that I can see a thing on their trees because it all just says 'living relative'!!!!!
I guess I am asking here, what is the accepted code of conduct?

thanks

Personally I think Family Tree Maker is the best program to use,try googling family tree programs, you can download demo versions for free which are fine to use as long as you don't want to upload your tree to the internet.

I got FTM you get a seperate code for the membership so its not activated till you put it in don't know about the rest.

Had great fun downloading my Genes and Ancestry Trees, merging them then breaking them down so they are split by my Great Grandparents surnames, as I know I can copy then merge them into one big tree if I want, it also means I can show people their 'branch', which I like as one side of my trees has got lots on and the other not as 'big or old' but thats because one sides been eaiser to find than the other, not because I've concentrated on that side. Additionally I have a more recent tree including living relatives thats just for me and close family to see to protect peoples privacy.

Now I just keep minimal details on Genes, just so I don't miss out on any hot matches.

You can down load a gedcom from here and add it into almost any tree program you buy and you can save from your tree program and upload either here or on ancestry

Hi there, I am fairly new, and 'accidentally' got into this an am now well and truly hooked! I have only joined here, and only have my tree here.
I am now thinking I should purchase a family tree program, particularly to give more flexibility in printing and sharing tree info.

My mind is boggling about how many hours work this is going to be..... do I have to start from scratch and data entry every single detail off here onto there? is there a shortcut? I am just balking at the amount of time it is going to take and it is putting me off.

Are there really lots of advantages to having your tree in multiple places? And I know it is all personal, but which is the generally accepted best program to buy if I was to invest. (I see some include free membership of ancestory etc...... do you have to then data entry everything to there AGAIN?.... and can you choose your start time of the free membership, or does it start the moment you purchase the program.

sorry , lots of questions!!!!!!
thanks
Liz
