You never got certs from the Family Records Office anyway. They held the big ledgers with the GRO refs and you ordered and paid for the cert there and it was either sent to your home address or you could collect a few days later from the Family records Office, In both case they came from Southport as they still do

Thanks for the advice! I can see some of you are real experts at this. I ended up just paying the £7 and so far they have all been right. The problems arise when you have too many choices I suppose, and you just have to take a chance. My rellies are all in the London area so I guess it's the Guildhall Library and Islington Library

If you order a cert from GRO online, use the box where you put extra information in (e.g. with a marriage where you have ordered it in the groom's name, put the bride's first or last names in as well*), they will check that its the right cert. If it isn't, they will email to let you know and refund the £3.

*be careful with this - they didn't send one of mine because I named her as Fannie and on the marriage cert she was Annie!

Hill, Jewell - Cornwall. Langley-Shropshire,Cole, Neate -Wiltshire,Lott, Ewell- Kent.Punter, Gadd, Wapshott, White, Weston - Surrey. To say nothing of the other half's family!

Jennifer, the local record office or register office in the area you are interested in usually charge £7 if they do them, but dont charge the extra three pounds if you give a reference and the certificate ends up not the one you want.

I got five the other day from Manchester, they are usually faster too, I did used to go and order them in the morning and go and do searches at Manchester library, then pick them up in the afternoon, although now they have changed and post them off as they are so busy. I still ordered them Wednesday and got them Friday, so a lot faster than GRO.

Am I the only person in the world who didn't know that you can't get certificates from the Family Recods Centre anymore? WHat do we do now? Just pay the £7 TO GRO? Does anyone know of a cheaper route?
