Mistakes on 1911 census grrr

I started looking at the 1911 census 3 days ago - and so far have found 4 mis-transcriptions, 3 of which were in one family. I had to double-check the actual census pages which has cost me lots of money so I'm not a happy bunny. To find some of these badly copied names I used surname-only searches together with year of birth which is also very time-consumingI can't believe that, for me, the error rate has been so high and I hope the rest of you have better luck.

Yes, I have also come across a number of mistranscriptions but in most cases they were understandable since the writing is often cramped or ill-formed. I suppose this is the price we have to pay for seeing our ancestors' own handwriting.

Mistooks adn erers do ockur, but wee are awl hewman! Ok, I do agree that the error rate I have experienced seems to be high than FMP/1911 would like us to believe. However I think it important that when you find major mistakes you should report them and, perhaps separately, seek reimbursement of wasted credits. In the real world, if you bought something from a shop then later found it faulty you would certainly seek a refund. Census info is no different, regardless of the year or census provider.

Hi, I have reported all of the errors and have had acknowledgements for 3 of them so far; they say they will sort errors out within 2 days - and today is day 2 so let's see if they can do this.

I have looked at a transcription error I reported in the first day or two of the census being online. I had a mail from them on 17 Jan, confirming that the error existed and that it would be amended 'shortly'.

I have just checked and it still hasn't been done. Perhaps they are still busy transcribing the rest of the counties. It will be interesting to see how long it takes.

Just checked back myself and, no, the errors haven't been corrected. Yet.

The errors look like simple "typos" as the original writing is pretty good.

Has anyone had anything corrected yet? I know it's early days.

Gordon, just checked for you and William is living at 8 Henry Street, Tunstall aged 2. He is living with Richard & Harriett Stockton and what looks like a brother Harrold aged 7. Hope this helps.

Barry
Many thanks for the info, this is most definite my Grandparents and my father Harold but his date of birth is 24 April 1903. as I said before ,William is new to me Dad never mentioned him at all. I found his birth 1909 and death 1913 after I had seen his name on the census and there is no one to ask now as everyone has passed on. Another brother Edgar was born in 1914 and his son lives in the UK.
O nce again many thanks to you both for giving me another name for my tree.
Regards from a very hot New Zealand
