I am trying to find James Claxton born 1844, spouse Martha, born and living in Norfolk.

I can find them using a basic search on A******y but I enter their details using this site but can`t find them. I`ve even did a search by just entering Claxton, 1845 and Norfolk then sifting through all the results but still can`t find them.

This is the first occasion I`ve not been able to find anybody using this site over the last 4 months of membership. Just wondering if anyone has had similar problems or have any suggestions.

the usual answer to not finding an ancestor is mistranslation ....... ancestry and findmypast have censuses that were transcribed differently, and there can be differences/difficulties between them.


Where does this site send you???

If it is to findmypast, and they have been mstranscribed on there, then you will not find them on here.


Remember that GR does not carry the records itself, they transfer you to another site.

Hi Heather, Think I will certainly change my subscription next time. Ancestry have military , emigration etc options which GR doesn`t have.

You may want to have a look at my thread re the less than half price sub for ancestry - it may have now expired, but check it out.

Do they have the facility to search under refs where GR send you?
If so this is the 1891

Would be interesting to see what they are transcribed as if they are there.

Have checked Ancestry site and can find no mention of a promotion or saving on normal subscription, will probably plod along with GR until my membership expires in April then review the situation. Appreciate your interest and help, thankyou.

Thanks for your idea but unfortunately there is no option available to allow you to enter details eg Source Citation: Class: RG12; Piece: 1555; Folio 29; Page 7. Its just forename, surname, birth date, -/+, place keywords eg Norfolk, Yorkshire etc.

The fact I can`t find James Claxton in my search now makes me wonder whether I have missed out on finding other ancestors who I couldn`t find previously.

Steve, the offer was on the australian site, but still covered UK records. Sadly it seems to have finished now.

BUT, why dont you take the ancestry 14 day free trial anyway?
