Thanks, looking at other posts on this board, I think the writing on the side of the certificate does say it is a statutory declaration. His name changed from William to 'John William' and his surname from Evans to Dwyer. Also his age from 21 to 18. This declaration was made by an Elizabeth Evans and an Anne Dwyer.

And the names he changed from and to - you should find the significance - you know about your family better than we do.

maybe he was brought up by a stepfather so thought his name was the stepdads, later found out he was registered under another name.
There are many scenarios! like maybe he was reg in mums name and she was unmarried. you need to go back to see if you can find him in the records

I have just received my G Grandparents marriage certificate and my ggrandad's surname is different on the certificat. There is a note at the side stating that the changes were made in 1918 (11 years after the marriage) and that it was his wife that witnessed the changes. Can anyone tell me what might have happened? Did he use a false name at the wedding? Was this common?

Any tips or advice will be gratefully received.
