Apols for the delay in replying. Thanks for that information about registration in Scotland. In later census Mary juniors place of birth Kelso, Northumberland. I have tried looking for Mary Kelly born Kelso, Scotland but have come up with nothing.

"Would this not have been illegal?"
Depends what you're referring to. It would have been illegal not to register Mary's birth, but not Susan's. It was compulsory from 1855 (SCT) and 1875 (ENG) - I'm surprized there's no birth rego for Mary as compliance was generally good, except in 1855. If John and Mary got marr'd in SCT, that also was most likely rego'ed (1855 on), but if they got marr'd in Ireland, and were RCs, then civil registration only started in 1864, so you'd better hope they wed in SCT. Ma Mary is a widow in 1881, so John death was probably rego'ed in NBL, seeing as that's Susan's pob, but could have been in SCT if it happened before Susan was born. In 1860ish SCT, it wasn't necessary to get wed in "an approved place of worship". I would presume they were marr'd by an RC priest, and there would be a parish record somewhere, but if you can locate daur Mary's b.rego, then it will say where and when her parents were wed.
Have you located Mary on any censuses after 1881? She might be more forthcoming abt her pob. I'm thinking if you've got christening records for her kids, you prob'ly have some idea of her later abode(s).

Sorry Gwen being dopey as ever. I have a Susan Kelly in 1881 Census living with her mother Mary and sister Mary. She is also a Godmother twice for sister Mary's children. I cannot find her BMD. Even spent the day going through Parish records to see if I could find a baptism, but could find nothing which is unusual as they were Catholics.

Sister Mary later marries William Hynes and birth years 1862 - 1864 born Scotland (one census Kelso). She gives father's name as John Kelly Shoemaker. There is one in Alnwick, but he is not her father. It also says deceased.

Surname Kelly living Hawkhill, Lesbury, Northumberland.

Sorry
Can you clarify what you mean here........
'Apart from the 1881 census Susan is a Godparent twice but I can find no marriage or death.'

If you'd like to post her name and census sightings, I'm sure people will do their best to help.

Does any one know what information is available on court records. I know my great grandmother was sentenced to six months in 1906. She was born in 1863 in Scotland (no registration) married in 1883 in England. She gives her father's occupation and name on her marriage certificate but it is definately not him. I have her on the 1881 census with a sister born in 1872 called Susan but there is no registration for her. Would this not have been illegal. Apart from the 1881 census Susan is a Godparent twice but I can find no marriage or death. Hardly any information given has been truthful. I'm gutted as it seems I have drawn a blank only as far back as 1863.
