i have found this family on the 1861 census and i have been trying to find their marriage but not had any success

If the above death is the correct one, then David didn't hang around before marrying again. This could be a second marriage to Ann (his wife's name on the 1881 and 1891 census):-

With the assumption of 'Hitchen' being misread as 'Hudson' when the index was written, everything else fits the other facts.

Linda, sending for the marriage cert might indeed give you some information, but be prepared for it to be wrong. That doesn't mean it is money wasted, but rather money spent in proving that you need to search further.

Before you send for that marriage cert, it looks as if Rhoda Long married William Penny (from Yorkshire bmd) - there is a William Penny on the same page on freebmd:

As I said before, the birth cert for Joel will give you her maiden name.
