Grumpy. Thanks for that site it was very interesting and also answered a few questions. It said chelsea pensioners often became police officers after 1850 and on my g.g. grandmother's marriage cert. her father 's occupation was a policeman which was baffling me a bit, so that mystery is probably solved. I have still to find him in the archives but will start looking again now as have not been on computer since Sunday.

Thanks again for your help

FMP are going to have the chelsea pensioner records some time in the future. The church of the Latterday Saints are currently scanning them at Kew and they are not available for research.

Thanks everyone for your help. Didn't have any luck with national archives. Will try and find out a bit more about him or perhaps wait for 3 years until the digitalisation is finished!!!

Thanks again.

The reason I asked when he was in the Army was to establish whether his records, if they've survived, would be name indexed on the National Archives website. You will only find his name on there if he was discharged up to 1854. Sounds possible that your man may have been discharged after this. Worth a try though, just in case he left before 1855 If he was discharged later, you will NOT find his record on the site - you will have to go to Kew or get someone to go for you. But, for this time period, it's essential to know which regiment he was in to find his records. There is, though, a 3 year project to digitise all surviving Army discharge papers up to 1913, so you could wait!

Barbara,

I maybe was fortunate my grandfather had an unusual name and was reasonably easy to search.

On the national archives opening page, I just put his name into the search box in the top right hand corner .... and up came my ancestor's name alongside ' Royal Hospital Chelsea - Soldiers Service Documents'

You could try that.

Angie,Have just googled chelsea pensioner and found it very interesting.

Annielaurie I am sorry don't know when he was in the army, but he died in 1866 in Mansfield, Notts, so he was obviously an out-pensioner, and his death cert. just said chelsea pensioner.

Helen, could you please tell me what category to search in on the National Archives. Have just been on the site and it is a bit confusing. Your help would be appreciated.

Barbara,

If you google 'The National Archives' you will be able to search for your grandfather .... as a Chelsea Pensioner.

He should have been in receipt of a pension.

You may find his papers giving details of his army career. Joining up dates etc. which you can then send off for at a reasonable cost.

I got my GGG Grandfathers papers which proved very interesting

I wonder if anyone can help. I have just found out my GGG grandfather was a Chelsea Pensioner, but he was only 47 when he died. Does anybody know where I can find more information about what they had to do to be a chelsea pensioner.

Thanks

Barbara
