Thanks for your help Jill. I'll just keep on digging and perhaps one day I'll get to the bottom of it.

Oh Lord - that does seem really confusing!

I have one similar to that in that the same surnames appear in consecutive generations and all happening in the same area. I am still trying to unpick it.

The trouble you might have with Sedgwick and Elsmore is that they lend themselves (as names) to being mistranscribed or misheard, so it's worth bearing that in mind too.

I have tried all sorts of combos to find a marriage and tried just Amy on earlier censuses but no joy I'm afraid.

Hi Jill

Not quite a coincidence that is George's mother and farther. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Elsmore and married George Sedgwick. George was born the same year. He also had a sister called Amy Sedgwick and for some time I've been thinking that this sister got herself pregnant and she and her brother George brought the child Beatrice up. Then seeing the 1911 census which also states that they had two other children who died I'm completely confused.

This is probably some sort of coincidence but I'm posting it anyway:

I've found her on the 1901 and 1911 where she is married to George Sedgwick with daughter Beatrice. With no birth certificate for Amy I don't know who her parents are. With this entry on the 1911 census I just wondered if she married George abroad. I do know he served in the British Army in India for a number of years, but according to his dischage papers was unmarried when he left the army. According to the 1911 census Amy and George had been married for 18 years which would make it 1893. George appears on the 1891 census in the army guading the Tower of London.

mmm.

Have you found Amy in the censuses? Have you tracked her back with her parents? Do they all say born in Birmingham?

To make it clear my grandmother is Beatrice Sedgwick (I've her birth, marriage and death certificates) her mother according to her birth certificate was Amy Sedgwick nee Elsmore. Her father was George Sedgwick, I have all his certificates. It's just Amy that's giving me trouble.

I have the birth certificate for my grandmother Beatrice Sedgwick, on the certificate it gives her maiden name as Amy Elsmore. They are living in Birmingham on the 1911 census but the entry regarding the phrase British by parentag is a bit puzzling.

Or she could be mistranscribed somewhere ... what was her surname?

No. It may just mean that there is no birth registration.

Although birh reg was compulsory from 1875 this did not always happen even after 1875. I have 6 (or 7) children from one marriage - none of whom have been registered!!! Plus, I cannot find the marriage of the parents!!!!

It's also possible that your gr grandmother was registered in her mother's maiden name / previous name? That could be worth checking out.

On the entry for my gr grandmother it states that she was born in Birmingham, England but the next column states that she is british by parentage. I've never been able to find a birth or marriage for her and even Birmingham Registry couldn't find a birth or marriage for them. Do I take it from this entry on the census that she was born abroad, and even married there. Any help would be appreciated.
