I'm usually pretty good at deciphering old writing esp Occupstions but this ones got me stumped, its my 4x G grandmother
on the 1841 census
Ann England born abt 1776
Piece 665; Book: 10; Civil Parish: St Mary Islington West; County: Middlesex; Enumeration District: 28; Folio: 12; Page: 19;
any Ideas?
Thanks

Gary

It's a difficult one.

I think it starts with an F - it looks like the F in F.S. for Female Servant and the first letter in the name Fanny and Frances on the same page. I think it ends with ss (but is written fs as they did in those days). I think there may also be another ss in the middle but I'm not sure.

Sorry - this doesn't help much. I've looked at the old occupation sites and can't find anything that seems to be anywhere near.

Its not easy. I think its an F or L to start with then ends in ess. But the bit in the middle! It seems a reasonable sort of district, son is a clock maker, bloke above a draper and above him wartch maker. Bloke below a silversmith. Are these shops?

I've had another look and wonder if it is Tailoress, but spelt wrongly as Tayloress. Just a thought.

Consensus over on FTF is tailoress as well. May be she did some work for the drapers next door?
