Hi Clare

Sunderland City Council - Local Studies Centre has an online search service. Not sure of your time frame but they have started indexing BDM's

http://www.sunderland.gov.uk/public/editable/themes/lifelong-learning/Localstudies.asp

The burial records for all of the municipal cemeteries are available on microfilm at the Local Studies Centre at the City Library. A search of these records will allow you to find the name of the cemetery and grave number of the person you are seeking.

You can also search records for Sunderland on

I had a quick look and found a few Penmans.
