Thank you very much for all your replies, it is interesting that not all marriages etc have yet been transcribed, I ddint realise that, and the point about registry offices and council cems.

Thanks once again

They may have died young, or married very late (later than you expect) or not had children.

If your grandads birth is 1908, depending when his siblings were born their marriages may not have been transcribed by the freebmd yet.

Might be worth to keep going back with your direct ancestors because on the chance someone else is looking at the same tree you both or one might have living relatives hidden and I think that hides relatives until 120 years back, so you won't start getting hot matches till you get further back, or put in death dates, I think.

Parish registers can be a long haul unless you are sure of the correct parish.
When you have received the birth certificate, search online for a marriage between the parents. Possibly this will get you back to 1901 census.
You should be able to find information too in 1911.

Siblings may be witnesses at marriages. These could give clues re. the correct family.

You can order filmed copies of parish records through your nearest LDS Family History Centre (addresses for these are on www.familysearch.org).
The films only cost a few pounds and they are delivered to the Centre and they keep them there for about a month to give you time to view them.

The centres are run by volunteers and all have different opening hours so you would need to phone your local one first to make an appointment.

You can also view parish records at the relevant County Records Office.

Hi
I am struggling to find information on my Dad's family. He knows his dad was brought up by an uncle and that his grandfatther was called James Spencer but not what his Grandmother was called. I have ordered my grandfathers birth certificate so we can confirm his mothers maiden name (he was born 1908). however, despite knowing my grandfather had a number of brothers and sisters and their names, and I think I have their birth registrations I can find no further trace of them, no marriage register or anything so I am thinking the way forward is to check the Parish records, but have no idea how to go about this. I now live down south and need to access the Parish records for Hunslet, Leeds, from 1900 onwards and then I can work backwards from there. How do I go about seeing these, who do I contact?
Many thanks
Vicki
