Parish records

I 'm at the stage of research now where I have to look at parish records, in this case Scottish. I've been to Scotland's people web site and been through a few searches.
How do you know when an ancestor is the one you're looking for?For example I've found a marriage for a couple who I know are ancestors but without ages or parents names on the document how can I find a birth for these people? Do I just guess how old they may be when they married. And what happens if they don't stay in the same parish from birth to marriage to death? What do you do when there are several possibilities?Anyone have any tips on how to sort it all out?
Look forward to hearing from anyone, but am off to bed now so will check for any replies tomorrow.
Thanks, Susie

The truth is, it gets really difficult, and you may neverknow!
However, use the censuses....some people live a long time and get in to the censuses.
I also look for clues in the pattern of naming of the children
I have no experience of researching in Scotland, but have you tried the Mormon site familysearch? Can be a lot of useful info there

I also check for deaths...don't know where you would look for those in Scotland
I also sometimes assume certain things and see where that leads...sometimes other info them comes up that proves or disproves...
What sort of dates are we talking about?

Good luck...hope someone else replies with more help!

It may be useful to google for family research centres in the area you are looking at .....Fife or whatever. There are some good Scottish sites around. Also, other free genealogy sites such as Rootschat have boards which concentrate on Scottish ancestry. Hope this helps a little.

If you want to look for deaths in Scotland pre registration they are not available on Scotland's people, although I was assured they would be available soon. Unfortunately that was more than 6 months ago so not quite sure how long soon is! I will be attending the Who do you think you are? event next week if I discover anything I will let you know

Just another thought, there is a site
curiousfox.org.uk
You can search free of charge...worth a look.
But it has a really useful extra function...you can put in the name of a village and get a list of all the villages within 1,2 ...up to 10 km from it....really useful for finding possible baptism places or villlages within courting distance. Seems to work for Scotland too...

Thanks for all your replies. I might try curious fox. Scotlands people only have death records from 1855 onwards and I am looking at mid to late 1700's so most are long gone by then. The earliest census is 1841 and same problem there too. Thanks once again and wish me luck,
Susie
