Hi guys, Im hoping you can tell me where to start. I am trying to find my paternal grandfather. I know his name and the date of his marriage to my paternal grandmother and have a 90% year of birth. How can I find out any further details. I have outlined a few names from the search records but what do the volume & page numbers mean. Is there somewhere I can now go to view these and if so how much information do they give and do they charge.

Sorry to be so vague but I really need some help getting started.

Many thanks, Elly

If you give the names, dates and places here someone will try to help.

The volume and page numbers are what you use to order birth, marriage and death certificates from the General Register Office. You can't view the certificates without buying them.

There will be a few gaps before you can start tracing back into the censuses where in order to get back you need to buy certs from Gro.gov.uk. order on line using the page and volume numbers they cost £7 and take around a week by post. There are lots of threads about starting up. Beginners tips etc.
If you get stuck put your question with names dates and places on Trying to find board, where several heads will look up for you.We all started somewhere so dont be afraid to ask !
