Thanks Dave for that info, will keep it in mind if I do get a chance to get to Kew. I was able to download the cards for City of Lille from the Archives website although they did not detail the convoys so delighted I now have those details courtesy of the convoyweb site.

Thanks. I have just had a look and it is easier to use than other sites, e.g. www.gordonmumford.com. I have been recently following up details of a couple of convoys at the National Archives. Once you have found the number e.g. PQ 5 it is quite simple to search their catalogue in the ADM series and find the original documents but you have to visit Kew to read them.

The documents there include copies of signals between the ships and reports by captains or other crew members on individual sinkings. They also include reports by the commanders of the convoys, which in my case pointed to a big dispute between the ships on who was in charge when some of the ships ran into a minefield.

Just found this brilliant site for those researching Merchant Navy Ships and the convoys they were attached to during WW2.
www.convoyweb.org.uk
Beware that the searches are limited but I managed to gain invaluable information about SS City of Lille and the voyages in WW2 when my father was a RN DEMS Gunner on this Merchant Ship.
