i have a man in the medal index but cannot find him in the pensions or service history. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Don't forget that not all surviving records are on Ancestry yet - lots for surnames beginning N-Z aren't on there yet. But it's still faily likely that records won't survive as so many were destroyed.

Just an outside chance..........you should know what regiment from Medal records and make enquiries to the Regiment or whoever hold their records.
