Anyone from the Southampton area? My Gregory family are all missing from the 1881 and 1891 census and feel that they must be mistranscribed but can not find them.

I am not asking anyone to try and find them because many have tried in the past. lol Just asking for suggestions.

Edit. Sorry meant to say they turned up in Liverpool in 1901,where the family settled. This is the reason why I thought the spoken word could have been misheard although it was correct in 1901

It all depends on how the transcriber at the time of the census heard their name and also how good his writing was, and how the transcriber nowadays sees the written word. I did a bit of transcribing on freebmd and was told to type what I saw, not what I thought or knew it to be. :-)

I am not aware of any problems with the local accent but then I wouldn't! would I?
Some people can tell which part of the city I live but this is mainly due to slang such as Mouch
Like anywhere we have posh and common.
Hampshire/Ampshire
Thornhill/Fornhill
Hamble Le Rice/Amble
I can only say that people are missing from every census and I could give you a long list of mine.

I 'lost' someone in Southampton in a census, but eventually found her after a long trawl through the images, looking at every girl with the correct first name.
She had been transcribed with the surname of the family immediately before her's on the schedule.

Still haven't found my great grandmother in 1861 though.....
