He may be on the central registers of merchant seamen at the National Archives at Kew. These are on microfiche and you need to visit to see them. I say that he may be, this is because there was a long period up to about 1912 where no central records were kept.
The crew lists mentioned above provide the detail but you need at least one ship to start from, and then it is possible to trace others.
If you can't get to Kew, I could have a look for you next time I go, but probably not until mid March.

Hi
Found a James Hagg b 1865 with mother Ann b in Queenstown Ireland.
When you read the original it actually reads Hogg.
They are living in Everton Liverpool 1881 census

i wonder if anyone could tell me if there is a way of finding out where a seaman was or what boats he sailed on .
i have a james alexander hogg c1864 liverpool lancshire.
i have him on the 1871 census and then nothing until 1901
any ideas would be most welcome.
