If the Fathers name and surname is missing on a wedding certificate, would that mean that person was illigitimate?
Are there any other reasons why it would be blank?

Ruth Paley has written a good book on Illigitimacy, well worth looking at

James, if you work backwards is this person on any census?

Yes,. it could be blank cos he was dead, or blank cos the person didn't know his name (either through illegitimacy or through him dying before he was too young to remember). His mother might have remarried but he knew his stepfather was not his real father, so didn't have him recorded either.

Or he might have just disowned him.

Thank You for all your replys.

Re. Birth Certificate, the year I think he was born there are 6 other births registered with the same name, plus more in the years either side.

Re Census, From the census after his marriage I know that his birthplace matches were he was living at the time of marriage. Although I have previously said there are 6 registered in the district I can only find one who lived in the right village. But he was living in with his parents 2 years before his marriage and his age also matches.
I can't find any deaths for the the name of his father in the two years before his marriage.

What I meant James, is did you find him living with parents as a child?
