Hi Susan

As Brinsleys said, the LDS is a good alternative, especially if you live a long way from the records offices (eg Australia!). They have film readers in their libraries, and you have to view the films there (you can't take them away). They charge a few dollars (or pounds) per film to cover delivery costs as the films are held at a central location, and they generally take a week or two to arrive (time depends on if anyone else has them on loan or not). At my local centre the staff are very friendly & helpful, and they don't talk about their religion unless you ask.

Find your closest LDS centre here: http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp

cheers,
Richard

Thanks Brinsleys,

How would you read the microfilm?

Have you thought about the local Family Search (IGI) Centre? For a small fee you can order a microfilm, which I believe will have images of the original records.

The Family search site will tell you which parishes and periods are abailable.

Many thanks for that Richard. I'd better have a trip to the Lincolnshire records office some time!

Not sure about FMP, but the parish records that are so far on Ancestry are only the transcriptions. Apparently though they are going to be putting on images of London registers this year some time, in conjunction with the LMA - so they are coming!

Could anyone please answer this question?

If I subscribe to a site like Find my Past or Ancestry .com and search parish records, do I see the actual image of the record, do I get a transcription or just the index ?

Many thanks,
Sue
