thanks for the tips and advice girls, yes, when I though about Ireland I guessed that it was around the time of the famine, and all the problems with the British, I will do a search on the Archive site anyway, as I don't know how long he would have served for. Thanks again, really do appreciate your input.

If he was still serving in 1872, his records won't be name searchable on the National Archives website - only those discharged up to 1854.

Lots of soldiers went to Ireland at that time - we owned the whole country then and so had army bases there. The irish famine was also about that period and uprisings. Have a google to read about it.

Have you tried putting his name in search on the National Archives site. You may get lucky and his Army records survive. I got my 5x grt grandfathers army records from them and he was in the Army from 1825 to 1849.
I ordered it online and it was sent in the post.

Thanks again Potty, just copied down all the info, yes I would agree about Emily's POB, will have to find out what was going on in Ireland at that time, as to why the father was there, it will be interesting to find out, if possible about his life as a soldier. Thanks again yvette

In the 1861 there also a daughter Emily aged 10, no place of birth given.

Found this in 1851:

Relation: Granddaughter
Gender: Female
Where born: Newbridge, Ireland

Civil Parish: Camberwell
Ecclesiastical parish: Emmanuel
County/Island: Surrey
Country: England

Occupation:

Condition as to marriage:

Disability: View Image

Registration district: Camberwell
Sub registration district: Dulwich

Susannah Cramp 45 born Surrrey, Linkfield
Charles Cramp 12
Caroline Cramp 11
Ann Cramp 24 - married, daughter in law, born Surrrey, Linkfield
Emily Cramp 4 Mo

Given Emily's POB, I would say it is very possible that her father was a soldier.

Hi Jackie, thanks, well the info that is on the marriage cert is as follows,

1872, William Henry Faulkner, marrying Mary ann cramp, both resident in Merstham, full age. Marys father is Edward cramp occupation listed as soldier, Williams father James- ag lab. the witnesses are James Bashford and Esther Faulkner. So Marys father may not have been present at the wedding, I guess he may have been stationed elsewhere,
Thanks for reading, any tips gratefully received!
