Just a thought. I can't imagine why your daughter keeps two family trees. I have everything on one, including remote branches, and it seems easy to print reports for just the main relatives.

Or have I got it wrong?

Anyone advise on this?

Heather is probably right, but for me, I would save the current file as a gedcom. file on your hard-drive (and maybe also on a CD/stick) before doing anything else.

I'd be frightened to death of losing my own hard-earned work! You should back up your gedcom regularly anyway.

Then import your daughter's file, but you might find that many records are now duplicated. So you have to go through the system of merging duplicates, which is a bit tedious, but also worthwhile if you want all your daughter's stuff on.

Keith, Glen has asked me to reply to your query - giving you this link for the explanation for merging:

You can merge the two separate files (trees) together to make one file (tree).

It would have all the names from both trees, all the images, notes, photographs etc.

If you go to the help centre it explains the process better than i can here, the most important thing to do first of all is to backup the files you want to merge, just in case things don't go quite right you can then revert to the files in their original state.

Go to ;

http://pastftm.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/pastftm.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php

Type the word merge in the keyword search, the second answer in the list should be "how do i merge files", the guide includes screenshots to help you along.

f you copy the files first then you can still merge them together and have the separate file as well.

Another option is called "splitting files", that allows you to take certain names from your tree and put them on a separate file (sort of merging in reverse!!).

The most important thing though is to backup your files to disc/stick before you merge/split anything.

If anyone else needs help with FTM software, Glen and some others have a comprehensive guide over on Family Tree Forum.

Have been using the above programme for my main ancestors and descendants for some time now and all are on one tree.
However my daughter has decided to create her own tree on her mothers side and has created a separate tree - presumably by using "file"and "new" family file.
The two trees are on the same programme but entirely separate.
Can any one please enlighten me as to how I can join the two together. Unfortunately I am not a computer wizard so would be very grateful for a little help.

Regards Keith
