Use www.gro.gov.uk to order certificates as it costs £7 (no p+p or hidden charges) this is the governments site and this is where all the other sites that charge more order from. You can also ask them to check a record say for the fathers name and they will charge you £3 if its not a match, rather than you ending up with a dud certificate, I think theres a thread somewhere saying some record offices don't charge to check records.

Depending on your great grandparents surnames and when thier wedding and births were registered will effect how much you can find without a certificate. I have one line rarish name easy to trace on the census and bmd, I though have a line whose name is so common I am going to have to buy the certificates.

I currently buy certificates for all my direct ancestors then I am more certain I am following the right line. For two of my great grandparents I couldn't figure out which birth was theirs so looked for their death, which helped indicate the correct birth. Depending on the age of your relations they maybe able to tell you approx when and were they died, and if its after 1983 the record the search brings up gives you the date of birth, although this is reported by the person registering the death so it could be incorrect, but also might be spot on.

Marriage certificates normally also state the father proffesion which can be helpful in trying to figure out which person is the one you are looking for if you have mutlipul possiabilities on the census.

Thanks for the reply Lindsey. I can't find them on any censuses because they married in 1925 (too recent for the censuses), and because I don't have a birth year or parents names, I can't really guess at them!
Think I'll have to bite the bullet and spend some money!

Have you found them on any of the censuses ?
You dont need to go to the area most certificates can be ordered online.

Trying to solve the mystery of when my great grand parents were born. I've narrowed down their marriage date to a quarter, so if I was to order their marriage certificate it would give me their approx year of birth and father's names (which I don't currently have).

Is there anyway I can find out this information without ordering the certificate? I can't get to the office where it's held because I now live in a different area.
Thanks!
