Hi, I've been searching for what seems like years for Frederick Ainsworth, born c1842 in Hammersmith (my great grandfather). The only census I can find him in prior to his marriage is 1861 when frustratingly he was a visitor. I know his fathers name was Charles, who had died before Fredk married in 1866. No idea of mother's name as I can't find Fredk's birth. I have an old family photo of my grandfather, Fredk's son and an uncle, neither of whom I ever knew, and they look very Jewish. In fact, there is more than a hint of Jewish in quite a few family members. I'm wondering if the Ainsworth's might have been Jewish, hence no sign of them before Frederick's marriage which was C of E. I don't even know if Ainsworth is a Jewish name. Does anyone have any ideas how I might research this. I've tried Ancestry, but without knowing where they might originate from, it's a bit complicated!!
Thank you.

If you backtrack to the Radley family,in 1851,and compare it with the 1861 they have been transcribed as Badley ,Fred is there as Badley same age same year , so maybe for the purposes of his french polishing business he may have changed his name ?

I think you may well have cracked it!! You don't know how many years I've been stuck on this. It throws up another question about the name change, but my family history on that side of the family (my Mum's) is riddled with questions. It feels wonderful to have broken through the brick wall at last and thank you so much for taking the time to look at it for me.
Kind regards

Denise

I do hope it's right, it does seem possible, ! I cant find anything for the name change, perhaps he was in business....so that is another can of worms !

I think it much more likely that the enumerator had difficulty reading your guys writing, and in particular distinguishing between B and R, so it's not reallly a name change, just a mistranscription by the enumerator.
