if you decide to get his service record go to this website
http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html

I believe that you have to send a copy of the death cert with the application and also proof that you are a relative, next of kin

Thanks for putting up the link mgnv - fascinating to see how much more info is on the Scottish register - but don't get your hopes up Joyce. The England and Wales GRO ones are just like ordinary registers except they include the rank/regiment abbreviation/service number together with the reference for ordering

In the case of Charles it is - year 1945 vol 8 page 264

The series for ordering is GRO WAR DEATHS ARMY OTHER RANKS (1939 to 1948)

It is a gamble ordering one of these death certificates and if he was killed outright or in some died of wounds cases you may not get any more information. If it was an accident or some other cause you might get a specific cause of death - but as Potty said family information would not be there

Cheers
Sue

If you want to see what a page from the WW2 war deaths register looks like, there's an example at the end of:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?r=554&404
Given the site, this example from the register is for servicemen with pob=SCT, but an English one would look the same.

Find My Past has the Army Roll of Honour 1939-1945

The record for Charles W Mills confirms he was born and resided in Portsmouth.

A copy of his service record would cost GBP30 and is only available to surviving next of kin

Cheers

All the death cert will tell her is place, date and cause of death. It won't give any information about his family.
