Thanks for helping with grandfathers death info. What is the best way to get a copy of death cert? What is the cost now? Can anyone help to guide me towards tracing where his children went wen he died. It was said Liverpool Seaman's orphanage and his sisters where eventually sent to Canada but I do not know when or where. Can anyone tell me if orphanages and children sent to Canada records are available? Thanks Marie

Hi Marie

Order your Birth, Marriage & Death (BMD) certs from the GRO site
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/order_certificates/ they are most reliable. Certs cost £7 if ordered online. Beware other organisations that charge astronomical prices for the same thing!

To search passenger lists of ships leaving England, try FindMyPast

Have you tried Googling the Liverpool Seaman's orphanage? There might be a local (Liverpool) history society who has details about it. Or check the census.

Good luck with your research,
Sue

Well Barnardos and McPherson Homes sent children to Canada if you have their names you may pick them up on the incoming vessel on the Canadian Home children site .google for it .It has a data base searchable by surnames alphabetically

I tried the GOV site for certificates and it asked for a personal reference, whatever that is. I have name, date, district and page no. Did not know what was meant by personal reference. So am off to the local Register office.

I will try google for Seaman's orphanage, and vessels leaving Liverpool although Williams is a difficult one unless there is an unusual surname.

Thank everyone

Personal ref is just so that you will know the transaction when it hits your debit or credit card. You dont have to put anything at all if you dont need it. I always use the ref "family research" but I recognise any transaction anyway as it does say its ONS Southport on any debit
