Census details not on birth registers?

I have found what I think are relatives on the 1901 census but cannot find these relatives in the bmd's. Am I doing something glaringly obviously wrong or do I have to look elsewhere? Any opinions, help, would be gratefully received. Amanda in Brighton |

Births pre 1875 may not have been registered. Although Records started from Sept qtr 1837 it was the registrar who went around his patch to record new births, People moved around a lot or just didnt agree with the "new" regulations so many births were missed. In 1875 it became Law that registering births was the parents responsibility and they had ,and still have, 42 days from the birth to do so .A fine was levied for late registration |
