There is a register of war related deaths, but it contains almost no info not found on the CWGC site. You can see a free example page at the foot of:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?r=554&404

If your guy attended Aberdeen Uni, or worked there, then there will be details of his war work/service - check my old thread:

my relatives death is on the commonwealth war graves commison site, but he is also on freebmd and has a death cert from home because he died of wounds in richmond. he is buried in the war graves section of richmond cemetery.

you may find he is both on cwgc and reg at home if like mine he was bought home and later died from wounds.

Lee.

Thanks Eileen,
I wonder if thats the place my helper is looking, seems my ancestor is proving hard to find, but as my ancestor was from Aberdeen i wondered if his death was registered there as well. I didn't know about the war graves commission so will have a look myself as well.

If they were in the armed services look at the war graves commission site.

Hi,
does any one know if the death of someone in ww1 would be found on the register of where they were from or under some other index.
