The GRO reference information you need is:

GRO Index to War Death 1914 - 1921 Army (other Ranks)

Name: WOOD William
Rank: Sgt.
Number: 13429
Unit: W.Y.R.
Year: 1918
Vol: I.38 (that's capital letter I, not number one)
Page 324

The GRO will be able to supply a death certificate from this information

hi there Pete,
thanks a lot for doing this for me. He was William Wood West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wale's Own) died 17/12/1918 aged 27 12th Battalion. Sergent. Lived in Leeds with his wife Lucy Ann Wood. Have found this out, but can't seem to find out how to find index. As i say it says Berlin South Western Cemetery, but his service was in France. I know that his wife paid to have his body buried over there in the war cemetary.
thanks again. Its really kind.

Have you found the death indexed in the GRO index of Army deaths in WW1. If not post the details (Name age Unit etc) and I will look it up on the relevant index. If he is buried in Berlin he died in German custody. I don't know if those deaths are in the GRO index - but it's worth checking.

hi there,
Help needed please
Trying to order certificate, don't know exact date of the month for his birth, i.e. know its sept 1891. Also on his medal records it says that he fought in France, but he is buried in Berlin South Western Cemetary, not sure where he died to be able to fill out form on GRO. Also not sure how to find the Reference in the GRO. Also it wil cost £10 because i have filled it in for dying abroad, is this right? Any ideas would be greatly welcome. Many thanks

Hi there,
Many thanks for that help. I will order it, if only for my records and to set the family tale right.

Many thanks for that again

My great grandfather was a soldier in WW1 who died in France of influenza. His death certificate simply state cause of death as influenza and gives the location of hospital in France in which he died.

His death was recorded in the GRO index of WW1 deaths and also on the CWGC website. I ordered his death cert from the GRO with the reference in the GRO index

Hi there folks,
Just wondered if anyone knew if someone who died in ww1, but not in action, whether the death certificate would say anything else, and would it be worth getting the certificate. My gran said that he died coming back from prisoner of war, and now perhaps it could have been the spanish flu, as it was really bad then. Also if think it might be could to send o for it, can you tell me where to send for it please.
many thanks
